Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Functions as a professional member of the Department of Psychiatry's Crisis Stabilization Team serving complex mentally ill patients in crisis in the CPEP and inpatient psychiatric settngs.

Responsibilities:

Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgement:

  • Responds to mentally ill patients in crisis who are in the CPEP and/or in the inpatient psychiatric unit setting to assess immediate need for de-escalation, to provide patients with emotional and tangible support to maintain or regain behavioral control and to support patient's progress towards meeting goals established in their individual care plan. Assist patients to ensure there is clear understanding of the patient's needs, as well as the expectation of the unit to ensure a safe milieu.

  • Trains to respond to patients who are in emotional distress with skills in verbal de-escalation, as well as OMH approved physical interventions as needed to ensure a safe milieu.

  • Communicates with unit staff and Department of Public Safety as necessary to provide support ot the patient in psychiatric crisis and to ensure a safe milieu..

  • Participates in education and training for provision of services to patient in psychiatric crisis..

  • Participates in data collection for Crisis Stabilization Team Services.

  • Attends weekly meetings. Orients and trains new staff.

  • Participates in all Quality Improvement activities.

Qualifications:

Associate's degree in a health-related field and 3 years experience in human services, preferably in a psychiatric crisis or emergency setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid New York State Driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Ability to speak Spanish, Vietnamese or be fluent in American Sign Language preferred.
