General Purpose:

Participates in developing and nurturing collaborative, inclusive relationships between the URMC and the community. Work with community groups to develop community health promotion initiatives. Identifies opportunities to link URMC resources to community identified needs; and promote the work of the URMC HVTN community health.


Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment:

Function as a liaison between the community and the HVTN: to disseminate information about the importance of research protocols that may contribute to positive overall health outcomes for the target population. Establishes and maintains positive community relationships to engender trust and active involvement in current vaccine trials. Educates volunteers and encourages involvement. Identify opportunities to develop, implement and support community health promotion initiatives, by linking faculty, staff and students with projects in the community that would increase visibility, increase recruitment opportunities, and encourage community involvement in measureable health improvement results.

Recruit participants: interviews perspective community participants using unstructured interview. Based on information provided, determines if follow up questions are need and asks appropriate follow up questions to gain additional information about their eligibility for specific research studies via: phone, email, social media, and face to face interactions

Represents the University at community health-related talks and events within URMC and in the community; network with those in attendance to increase awareness of educational resources and seek community feedback on how we can help improve and then connect them with studies in which they may have an interest and/or would be willing to participate in.

Identify and build relationships with community agencies, for example, area colleges, and other community organizations, including but not limited to Oasis, Assisted Living facilities for the elderly, Urgent Care Centers, Primary Care and other Medical Practices, Veterans Outreach, and other community agencies; and participate in health fairs and community activities, in order to continue to build community trust and engagement. Facilitates informational sessions, when appropriate. Initiate follow up with community contacts made via e-mail and phone to maintain community relationships. The focus will be on developing, implementing and supporting this initiative in a way that is successful both in community participation and in measurable health improvement results.

Develop, implement, and evaluate customized recruitment strategies for the targeted population. Analyses recruitment success and then makes recommendations to leadership for further development of additional strategies.

Develop processes to help identify opportunities to ensure effective communication with stakeholder groups related to community health improvement activities and other pertinent information. Design recruitment flyers; assist with media interviews and news articles to disseminate information about the research studies. Collaborates with the URMC Public Relations Department, the GR-PBRN network, CTSI and other URMC departments to develop new opportunities for recruitment. Evaluates advertisement methods and makes recommendations on further development of advertising, education and recruitment. Determine appropriate outlets for recruitment; create the online social media options for recruitment, including website development on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media recruitment options and periodic newsletters.


Bachelor’s degree in Social Science field, plus 2-3 years related community experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer interest in research, vaccine development and education. Possess cultural competency, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Experience with social media, marketing and research extremely helpful.
