Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Simulation Lab (SIL) designs and fabricates educational models to enhance surgical resident training and creates a safer environment for patients. This laboratory seeks to use an engineering approach to problem solving and create iterative improvements after scientific validation. We are seeking a Co-op Student to assist in engineering and construction of simulation models using 3-D printing and polymer molding techniques.

Responsibilities:

Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment and action, the Co-op Student will:

  • Assists with developing and designing physical, education simulation models using 3-D computer aided design (CAD) software. This includes the creation of anatomical models (kidney, liver, brain, etc.) or other surgical skills simulators. Assists with technical procedures, non-routine and complex in nature.

  • Prints new 3D components that are needed for fabrication of educational models. Assists with troubleshooting and maintaining the 3D printer in cases of simple mechanical malfunctions (e.g. printer head malfunction). Sets up and operates sophisticated equipment or instrumentation. Constructs major units of equipment.

  • Assists with improving the functionality of the simulated models by engineering more life-like attributes (ie: appearance, bleeding, or movement). Utilizes an MTS (mechanical testing system) to measure the polymer modulus and confirm model realism.

  • Molds polymers to create organ geometry that has an arts and crafts like feel. The applicant should enjoy painting and sculpting types of work. Daily activities will include mixing, coloring and molding polymers.

  • Participates in the implementation of surgical simulation and performs comparative effectiveness of other available educational tools.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited program for a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline.

  • Knowledge of various CAD software (i.e. Solid Works, Autodesk, Mesh Mixer etc .. ); knowledge about using an MTS (mechanical testing system) to measure the polymer modulus and confirm model realism preferred.

  • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.
