Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the section supervisor and with specific direction from the lead tech, this position has primary responsibility for the pre-analytical processing of patient specimens that are to be accession into the laboratory. Exercises moderate skill, judgment and a knowledge of the terminology and common procedures and practices of Medical Technology in Molecular Diagnostics. Enters and edits patient demographics in the laboratory and hospital computer systems. Receives, prioritizes, accessions and distributes clinical specimens to appropriate laboratory stations in order to meet processing needs. Handles specimens so that integrity is maintained. Serves as a resource to physicians, nurses and other laboratory personnel regarding specimen handling and processing. Imports patient results into the surgical pathology reports after release by the molecular diagnostic directors. .

Job Responsibilities :

Lab (Technical) Support

  • Provides pre-analytical support such as aliquoting reagents

  • Assists technologists in the pre-analytical handling and processing of specimens which may include centrifugation, and storing of samples.

  • Maintains equipment and environmental temperature and duty charts. Monitor water quality. Conducts initial assessment and works with technical team and Supervisor to troubleshoot out of range conditions and documents all corrective actions.

  • Sends equipment for calibration and repair

  • Participates in quality monitors and initiatives. Compiles data and performs internal quality checks to facilitate smooth and accurate operations.

  • Performs equipment maintenance.

  • Ensures cleanliness of laboratory.

  • Provides support to research and development initiatives

  • Participates in equipment validations

  • Trains staff and participates in employee evaluations and staff competency

  • Participates in the management of shipments

Sample Management

  • Receives and/or collects specimens from all locations via couriers or pneumatic tube station.

  • Monitors pending reports

  • Tracks and documents receipt of specimens. Tracks missing specimens.

  • Uses advanced knowledge of specimen requirements and stability and knowledge of test menu to prioritize handling of stat/urgent specimens and those needing special handing.

  • Takes appropriate action to ensure specimen integrity whenever testing may be delayed.

  • Works with a variety of health care providers to troubleshoot problem specimens and to clarify correct test selection. Provides problem resolution for sample handling: missing information, split samples, sample retrievals, misdirected samples, and requests for additional samples. Independently follows up on all problems and discrepancies as needed.

  • Answers questions from specimen collection locations regarding transport and minimum volumes.

  • Informs ordering providers when the ordered test(s) cannot be performed and works to remedy this situation whenever possible.

  • Prepares specimens for transport to specialized areas of testing (i.e. specialty labs, reference lab).

  • Manages sample archive storage system and specimen disposal as specified by laboratory storage guidelines.

Administrative Support

  • Receives incoming telephone calls and triages calls to appropriate laboratory as necessary. Provides specimen requirements and stability information.

  • Takes appropriate action as needed to meet the customer’s request, including test request add-on’s and proper transfer of calls to other destinations as needed.

  • Participates in Quality Assurance data collection as required.

  • Promotes a positive employee engagement environment. Proactively participates in regular feedback, communicating concerns, and supporting the implementation of improvement initiatives.

  • Oversees department specific functions to ensure operations are running at an optimal level.

  • Performs other responsibilities and projects as assigned.

Qualifications :

Associate’s degree in science or a related discipline with 1-2 years of clinical laboratory or medical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Customer Service experience preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology a plus. Familiarity with PC’s and software applications needed.

Pay Range

Pay Range $18.52 - $25.01 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
