OVERVIEWThe Associate Director of Equity and Inclusion (EI)-Research and Research Education (R&RE) is a key member of the SMD Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) team responsible for supporting SMD’s strategic priorities in support of the University of Rochester's five institutional goals and priorities to build an equitable, diverse, and inclusive learning and work environment for all members of its community. The Associate Director will develop and implement strategies to ensure R&RE programs are representative and inclusive of a global community. The Associate Director will plan, implement, and support programs that meaningfully recruit and retain diverse individuals including, but not limited to Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), individuals with disabilities, deaf and hard-of-hearing, and LGBTQ+ communities into and within the SMD research community. The Associate Director will establish baseline metrics, desired outcomes, and goals for recruitment and retention of communities that are underrepresented in science, and will track, analyze, and report upon progress. The Associate Director will be responsible for supporting, and increasing representation of, communities that are underrepresented in science, and will work directly with the Associate Dean for EI-R&RE to ensure this remains a priority across SMD and the University, establishing and maintaining critical relationships with pipeline institutions, learners, faculty, staff, alumni, and senior administration. The Associate Director will also identify opportunities to incorporate R&RE perspectives and voices in SMD and University conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Culture and Climate (30% effort)

  • Ensure all members of the research community, especially graduate students, postdocs and other learners, experience a professional and nurturing environment, ensuring they are able to thrive and reach their full potential.

  • Work with research departments, research areas and graduate programs on specific needs related to interventions and restorative practices during and after incidents.

  • Contribute to building the infrastructure to become a restorative practice and social justice minded institution.

  • Contribute to creating a climate that is founded on principles of anti-racism and social justice that are civil, supportive and respectful, and that values differing perspectives and experiences.

  • Research, write, and submit grants in collaboration with SMD and department representatives, in support of improved mentoring, culture, and climate.

    Advisement, Mentoring and Support (25% effort)

  • Serves as a resource providing advisement, mentoring and support for research pipeline program participants, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and junior faculty.

  • Lead crisis response efforts for SMD learners struggling academically, personally or both.

  • Conducts exit interviews with exiting researchers from diverse groups.

    Recruitment and Graduate Pipeline Programs (20% effort)

  • Provide recommendations for and evaluation of SMD research recruitment efforts for graduate pipeline programs, graduate programs (PhD, Master’s Advanced Certificate), postdoctoral scholars, and faculty in relation to SMD and University equity and inclusion goals and priorities.

  • Represent SMD research and research education at recruitment fairs and related opportunities targeted toward populations underrepresented in science.

  • Provide recommendations for and evaluation of SMD research pipeline programs managed at the SMD and department level.

  • Build partnerships with relevant organizations working with diverse populations at the University, in the Rochester community, nationally and globally.

  • Research, write, and submit grants in collaboration with SMD and department representatives, in support of pipeline programs.

    Training and Development (15% effort)

  • In collaboration with Culturally Responsible Management and Learning and Development, develop a comprehensive strategy for building and managing a training and development program for research faculty, learners, and staff that includes antiracism, bias-related incident reporting requirements, cultural awareness, healthcare disparities, identity development, inclusion, unconscious bias, and wellness as these concepts relate to recruitment, graduate admission selection, hiring, academic advising, instruction, research training, ethics and the responsible conduct of research, mentoring, and interpersonal relationships.

  • In collaboration with The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), develop a comprehensive strategy to identify and support incoming pipeline and graduate students who are not fully prepared, or who do not feel fully prepared, to be successful in graduate school.

    Affinity Groups and Programs (5% effort)

  • Develop a comprehensive strategy for building, managing and supporting affinity groups and programs, with the explicit goal of increasing engagement across underrepresented populations within the SMD and University community.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key campus partners and OEI colleagues who should be engaged in developing or supporting these affinity programs, and work to ensure positive interactions and outcomes across all stakeholders.

  • Ensure coordination between identity-based affinity programs and other, relevant University groups and activities, and OEI.

    General (5% effort)

  • Develops and controls operating budgets for research and research education equity and inclusion efforts.

  • Supervise, train and develop the Administrator for Research and Research Education.

  • Other tasks and duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion, Research and Research Education


  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of Equity and Inclusion, student counseling or career services experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's or doctoral degree preferred.


  • Outstanding communication skills, including direct interpersonal skills and strong writing ability.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the needs and experiences of a diverse constituency.

  • A demonstrated understanding, ability to work with, and desire to serve underrepresented populations.

  • Ability to analyze, condense and synthesize information and ability to provide accurate analysis and summaries.

  • Excellent organization and project management skills, with an ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects with keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team to accomplish objectives.

  • Experience with computer technologies and sophisticated software applications.
