General Purpose:

Oversees the design, implementation, and evaluation of a coordinated UHS Health Promotion Program for the University community. Programs include health education, health promotion, consumer education, and patient advocacy.

Reports to:

Director of University Health Service

Specific Responsibilities:

Under general direction and with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative:

  • Program Management

  • Takes the lead in developing and evaluating the health promotion component of the UHS Health Promotion Office.

  • Plans, develops, and evaluates the UHS consumer education program, including the production of UHS written materials for the student health program and the coordination of UHS staff involvement in orientation programs for entering students, parents, international students, and graduate students.

  • Develops and reviews health education information prepared by UHS staff members.

  • Supervises professional, clerical, and student staff in the Health Promotion Office.

  • Conducts ACHA National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA) and Core Alcohol and Other Drug surveys. Collaborates with UHS Health Educator to recommend strategies based on findings.

  • Manages the Health Promotion Office budget; prepares periodic and annual reports.

  • Student Involvement

  • Works with students and student groups to encourage student participation in consumer education and health promotion activities. Advises the University of Rochester Student Health Advisory Committee.

  • Advises students completing independent study projects and practicum courses.

  • Patient Advocacy

  • Serves as the UHS Patient Advocate, representing patients' interests in concerns involving UHS practices, policies, or staff. Responds to comments, suggestions, and grievances. Works with managers to resolve issues. Represents interests of UHS patients and consumers in UHS meetings.

  • Reviews UHS practices as they affect patient satisfaction and quality of services and recommends changes in practices to improve services offered to patients.

  • Conducts patient satisfaction and consumer attitude surveys. Recommends strategies based on findings.

  • Accreditation

  • Collaborates with UHS accreditation manager to support UHS-wide preparation and readiness for accreditation.

  • Participates in the review of policies and procedures to reflect changes within UHS and to correspond with changes to accreditation standards. Assists with the development of training materials to train staff in preparation for accreditation surveys.

  • UHS-Wide Involvement

  • Conducts staff satisfaction surveys and prepares summary reports to share with UHS leadership and staff.

  • Serves on the UHS Leadership Team and UHS Operations Committees and represents the Health Promotion Office on UHS and university-wide committees. Serves as a spokesperson for the University Health Service.

  • Collaborates with staff and faculty throughout the University on projects, programming, and research. Develops a network with professionals at the University, state, and national levels.


Master's degree and 3-5 years experience in health education or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
