Appointment Details

Full Time. Position begins with a three-year contract that may be renewed as a four-year contract.

The Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program ( at the University of Rochester is seeking applications for three non-tenure Assistant Professors (in the Instructional Track ( ) with academic or professional experience that can speak to one or more of the following areas: Writing Studies/Composition/Rhetoric, legal writing, STEM fields, social sciences, digital and multimodal communication. The ideal candidate will value diversity, equity, and inclusion ( and relate these principles to their pedagogical approach and community interactions.

A Ph.D. or Ed.D. is expected, but ABDs will be considered. Although an advanced degree is required, the degree need not be in Writing Studies/Composition/Rhetoric, but if the degree is outside this field, the candidate should have extensive writing experience in one of the areas listed above.


· Teaching 24 credits per year, typically a combination of 4- and 2-credit courses distributed across the fall and spring semesters

· Participating in program meetings, workshops, and events

· Contribute to program initiatives through committee and other work that strengthens our community

· Faculty are expected to engage in scholarly work to advance teaching and learning goals; we support scholarship through collaborative projects, writing groups, and conference support

WSAP is an interest-based composition program that offers writing studies clusters and minors that complement students’ academic and professional goals across Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. Our instructors ( and tutors ( come from a range of disciplines; our curricula and programs typically emerge from collaborations with other departments and programs across Arts, Science, and Engineering. We are looking for candidates who love to teach, have an interest in writing studies research, and are excited to be part of an innovative, interdisciplinary, collaborative--and friendly:)--community.

Initial appointment (approximate start and end dates): July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2026.
