The University of Rochester Department of Family Medicine has well-established and continuously funded programs of research on eliminating healthcare disparities and improving communication in healthcare, with a particular focus on promoting health equity. Our team has focused on improving care for those with hypertension, HIV/AIDS and cancer, for those at the end of life, and for deaf sign language users and people with hearing loss, and on improving clinician mindfulness. Our research is interdisciplinary and interprofessional, collaborating closely with faculty from many University schools, departments and centers, such as the cancer, computer science, nursing, public health and our Clinical and Translational Science Institute, including their new Office of Health Equity Research. We value close mentoring, relationship-centered care, a commitment to equity and inclusion, and embracing the University’s motto of “Meliora” – Ever Better.

The University of Rochester is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian, and nonprofit research university, and the Medical Center (URMC) is one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers and the centerpiece of the University of Rochester’s health research, teaching and patient care missions. Over the past five years, URMC has garnered more than $1.18 billion in biomedical research, landing us in the top 26th percentile of U.S. medical centers in federal research funding. URMC was one of the first 12 academic medical centers to receive a Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health and has been continually funded by this grant for a total of $86 million.
