The University of Rochester Medical Center division of Cardiac Surgery seeks a full time BE/BC adult cardiac surgeon with experience in congenital heart disease and heart failure . The successful candidate will join a group of 4 cardiac surgeons in a busy academic cardiac surgery program that offers the full spectrum of complex cardiac surgical care to patients from a catchment area that spans upstate and western NY as well as northern Pennsylvania.
The URMC Heart Center averages over 1000 surgical cases per year and includes a robust, multi-disciplinary heart failure program that has been a national leader and innovator in minimally invasive ventricular assist device implantation. There has been a fully accredited heart transplant program at URMC for several decades. The program is also a leader in minimally invasive valve surgery with almost 100% of valve cases done in this manner. URMC Cardiac Surgery supports an integrated 6-year cardiothoracic training program and has also trained many cardiac surgery residents in the traditional 5+2 model from the large General Surgery Training Program here. The program has a newly created dedicated 22 bed ICU fully staffed with a team of 7 cardiac critical care intensivists and 20 advance practice practitioners all of whom are employed by the division. There is a very robust percutaneous structural heart program (189 structural valves in 2020) with all cases directed by a cardiac surgeon and interventional cardiologist. All valve referrals are seen by a cardiac surgeon at the initial visit and a team-based approach has been key to our success.
The University of Rochester has the largest congenital heart disease program in New York State outside of New York City. It is the regional referral center for Buffalo, Syracuse and much of northern Pennsylvania. The pediatric (under 25) age group is cared for in the freestanding Golisano Childrens Hospital directly connected to the main hospital.
The University of Rochester is a quaternary referral medical center with referrals from across the broad region of New York State with a dedicated, expert cardiac transport team via both air and ground. The Department of Surgery has outstanding research infrastructure for both basic/translation and outcomes research and the Division of Cardiac Surgery has a long and storied history of academic productivity and innovation in clinical care, education and research.
