Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Serves as a primary academic coach for middle and high school students enrolled in the Center’s college preparatory programs in the Rochester City School District. Develops and implements programming, reporting, advising and other required services for students served by the federally-funded Talent Search, Upward Bound, and/or Upward Bound Math/Science programs. Staff in this position will spend the majority of time in the academic year in the target schools (typically, 4 days a week), with 15% of time in the academic year (one day per week, plus school breaks) and 100% of time in the summer at UR. Weekly scheduled hours may vary due to the nature of the work.

Resposibilities:

Academic Advising and Student Support

  • Recruit, interview, and determine eligibility of potential program participants.

  • Assess participants, through use of standardized tests, school district data, and other needs assessments, to determine participant needs.

  • Advise and assist students with educational plans, and academic achievement issues. Refer students when necessary to other agencies.

  • Work directly with seniors to ensure timely submission of all college applications and financial aid materials.

  • Conduct workshops on financial aid and the college application process.

  • Connect participants with high quality academic and other services as described in the funded grant applications.

  • Prepare and deliver academic course curricula during the summer program component, as well as during other RCSD school breaks.

  • Organize, implement, and attend college visits, including local and regional as well as national visits when appropriate.

  • Meet with parents, guardians, school-based advisors, teachers, and others as necessary and appropriate to serve as an advocate for the student’s educational needs.

  • Once participants reach college, help them connect with other support services, such as those provided by other TRIO programs or state funded agencies.

On-going program activities

  • Assist the management team in conducting regular program evaluation and assessment; implement necessary and appropriate program adjustments based on evaluation findings.

  • Assist in data collection and reporting to the US Department of Education.

  • Attend professional development workshops and conferences as appropriate.

  • Travel with students; serve as student advocate.

  • Work with the management team on organizing large-scale events: orientation, senior banquet, and others. Assist in the development of the summer program staff and curriculum.

  • Assist the Dean of Diversity Initiatives and management team on grant proposals relevant to the target population.

  • Work as part of the Kearns Center team with regard to diversity initiatives on campus.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • At least two years of experience working with students in the target population, a desire to work with high school students, an understanding of the college application and enrollment process and potential

  • obstacles to success on that path. An undergraduate degree or concentration in math, engineering, or science is preferred.

  • Previous training in fields that relate to the project’s objective of increasing the numbers of low-income, first-generation college students who excel academically. Prefer some teaching/counseling experience at the high school level.

  • Mandatory: The ability to relate well to high school and college students from low income, first-generation college, and underrepresented minority backgrounds.

  • Sense of humor, patience, the ability to communicate effectively and work on a team are essential.

  • A clean, valid NYS driver’s license is mandatory. Other information:

Pay Range

Pay Range: $54,808 - $76,752 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
