3D Image Processing Specialist - Remote

Under general supervision of the 3D Post-Processing Laboratory Director, the Medical Image Processing Specialist manipulates digital medical images in multiple planes and dimensions for clinical visualization and quantitative analysis of diagnostic and interventional studies. Must be well versed in CT and/or MRI scanning technology, and possesses a sound understanding of human cross-sectional anatomy and gross pathology.




Computer workstations used to perform clinical image post-processing, CT and MRI scanners.


  1. Operates computer software for production of 3D images and multiplanar reconstructions from CT and MRI datasets for optimal visualization of patient’s anatomic structures and pathology, using established protocols. Develops new post-processing protocols as needed. Produces quantitative measurements when indicated.

  2. Ensures that images requiring post processing or manipulation are networked to appropriate workstations, and processed images are networked to PACS and other viewing or archival systems in a timely manner.

  3. Works in conjunction with radiologists and other clinicians to ensure that the post processed images are of maximal clinical value.

  4. Uses the radiology information systems to check patient medical history and update exam status, for tracking and billing purposes.

  5. Assists in the instruction of physicians and technologists who are learning image post-processing applications.

  6. Works with sponsored research projects to provide advanced image post-processing and quantitative assessments.

  7. Shifts available in the CT and MRI departments to maintain scanning skills.


  • Completion of formal training in an approved School of Radiologic Technology.

  • Maintains NYS license, ARRT and CPR/BLS certifications with CE credits as required.

  • Minimum of 2 years of MRI or CT scanning experience preferred.

  • Ability to operate complex computer equipment.

  • Expected to sit in front of a computer for prolonged periods of time.

  • Excellent communication skills necessary to relate to physicians and peers on a professional and technical level.

Band Two: MEDICAL IMAGE PROCESSING SPECIALIST – With minimal supervision is responsible for performing standard post-processing, production of 3D images and multiplanar reconstructions from CT and MRI datasets using established protocols, networking of images between scanners, appropriate workstations, and PACS. Completing all associated paperwork and computer work, updates exam status, for tracking and billing purposes. Additional duties may include working on special projects, such as creating documentation of procedures and instructions to be shared with CT and MRI technologists, new software evaluations and assisting in selecting of new software packages and their set-up, or assignment to departmental committees.

Band Two requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience as a specialist in Computed Tomography or Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a clinical or hospital environment with at least 6 months dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department, certification in Computed Tomography or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and capable of performing all CT or MRI related duties.

Band Three: ADVANCED MEDICAL IMAGE PROCESSING SPECIALIST - In addition to the responsibilities of Band Two, assists in the instruction of newly hired technologists directly orienting to imaging routines and procedures, computer programs and software. A Band Three Advanced Medical Image Processing Specialist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Directly assists in the mentoring of existent employees by providing one-on-one assistance with post-processing workflow refreshers. A Band Three Advanced Medical Image Processing Specialist is a master expert in all software packages used for post-processing, actively researches alternative techniques, develops new post-processing workflows, works directly with radiologists and researchers to assist with new inquiries, and offers expert opinions on best practice. Along with the lab director, they participate in educational activities, training/assisting radiology residents with post-processing projects, meetings to discuss integration of work with other sections within the Imaging Sciences Department, and referring physicians from departments across the Medical Center. It is expected that at this level, the specialist will maintain basic scanning and patient care skills, in order to be accustomed with the latest technological developments in image acquisition and patient care, critical to the work in the post-processing lab.

Select Band Three Advanced Medical Image Processing Specialists may be designated as Leads to support operations of the laboratory. Leads will assist the lab director, determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also provide performance evaluation input to the director as well as input to develop departmental goals and objectives.

Band Three requires a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as a specialist in CT/MRI and image post-processing in a clinical or hospital environment with 1 year dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department preferred. Technologist must be certified in CT or MRI, and must satisfy the requirements and be capable of performing all duties of a Band Two Medical Image Processing Specialist. Band Three Specialists should also be comfortable operating many of the various platforms that exist within the UR CT and MRI environment.

To be eligible for advancement consideration, technologist must be in good standing. Readiness for movement in the bands is assessed by the lab director after demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency as defined in the career ladder. Movement to a higher band is based on departmental need and requires final approval from the Imaging Sciences Clinical Director of Operations in collaboration with Human Resources. Employees hired externally with appropriate credentials and relevant experience may enter the career bands as a Band Three to serve in a Lead role if the need exists within the department.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $28.25 - $36.73 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
