The social worker assigned to the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) functions as a primary evaluator or complex discharge planner, both exclusively and separately, and as dictated by the needs of patients who are present in CPEP or as determined by the Charge Nurse. The primary evaluator functions include completion of psychosocial risk evaluation, psychiatric evaluation focused on determining the need for inpatient admission versus discharge, crisis intervention, continuity of care between CPEP and inpatient or outpatient providers, resource consultation, and routine discharge planning for patients admitted to the Psychiatric Emergency Department. The function of the Complex Disposition Planner includes identification and intervention around individual and systemic barriers to discharge; collaboration with other agencies, services, and community providers toward achieving discharge; notification and involvement of administrative personnel to achieve a safe discharge.
The social worker who occupies this position must have a MSW from an accredited social work graduate program, and must obtain New York State licensure within eighteen months of employment.
