Job Summary:

The Community Health Educator (CHE) will be the lead liaison between WCI, CCH and the community regarding cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, and risk reduction strategies for multiple cancer types. The CHE will possess a thorough knowledge of cancer prevention and early detection strategies and activities. The CHE will work with community partners and other collaborators to increase cancer awareness, knowledge and education of cancer prevention throughout the Finger Lakes region. CHE will function in multiple capacities to ensure that WCI and CCH are positively represented throughout the region.

Specific Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain working relationships with community agencies and organizations interested in cancer education, and cultivate relationships or partnership development efforts between the WCI, CCH and the community.

  • Identify opportunities to partner with local entities such as schools, churches, municipalities and other community-based organizations to develop, coordinate and implement methods for cancer education.
  • Organize and prepare educational materials and programs based on cancer awareness, prevention, risk reduction and early detection strategies.
  • Develop health education training, and community presentations delivering cancer prevention information.
  • Advocate for health policies that increase awareness and resources for cancer prevention
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of cancer prevention and early detection education programs and materials.

Plan, organize and execute community outreach and educational programs on behalf of WCI and CCH.

  • Identify and coordinate event sponsorship opportunities.
  • Working within budget availability, make and prioritize recommendations of sponsorship opportunities for community events.
  • Collect and provide information on how the event meets the criteria.
  • For all events sponsored, collect and track follow-up information on results of the event.

Serve as outreach representative on the WCI Cancer Committee.

  • Coordinate speaking engagements and presentations for WCI and CCH staff.
  • Track all activities in accordance with American College of Surgeons standards.
  • Attend quarterly meetings and report to the Cancer Committee on community outreach activities as required.

Positively represent WCI and CCH at community meetings and forums on community health related topics.

  • Participate in community events and health fairs; speak to churches, clubs, and community organizations.
  • Attend community health-related talks and events and network with those in attendance to increase awareness of cancer prevention and risk reduction strategies.
  • Participate in organizations, as assigned, positively representing perspectives of WCI and CCH, and bring back information that would be helpful to the organization.

Serve as point of contact for community inquiries.

  • Handle community inquiries for speakers or for assistance in connecting to WCI and CCH.
  • Collect information on what is needed, follow up with person requesting information, and track all requests and follow-up on appropriate log.
  • Develop processes to ensure effective communication with community partners related to expanding the use of WCI and CCH cancer prevention programs among target populations.
  • Look for additional opportunities to improve effective communication (i.e. working with others in CCH to coordinate more effective participation in health events).

Diversity Awareness

  • Work effectively with diverse groups of people from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds.
  • Educate members of the priority populations about the importance of cancer prevention

Other responsibilities as assigned including, but not limited to:

  • Use computer programs proficiently, including use of the Internet, database management and data entry programs.
  • Collect, edit and enter information in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure the security and confidentiality of all client information.
  • Provide back up support to CSP staff when applicable to ensure all program needs are met.
  • Assist WCIPublic Relations, Marketing, and Advancement teams in planning and staffing community events, such as health fairs or other events, where WCI is represented.


Graduation from college or an equivalent combination of experience and training. 3 years of related work experience including at least 1 year in an administrative capacity in an academic office or project management, or the equivalent experience in business.

Prefer Bachelor’s Degree, plus 5 years related community experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer 2-4 years experience in community relations, community organizing, or community health promotion efforts; previous work demonstrating the cultivation and sustainability of community partnerships and collaboration; demonstrated ability to work with grass roots and public interest groups and community coalitions. Requires experience working with people of diverse cultural backgrounds; excellent written and oral communication skills; and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficient in MS Office software. Some weekends and evenings required. Bi-lingual preferred, but not required. Valid NYS Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
