We are currently seeking to fill a faculty position for an experienced academic Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrician in the Division of Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of the University of Rochester. This is a vibrant multidisciplinary division with approximately 90 faculty and staff that participate in active clinical and research programs focusing on autism spectrum disorders, health disparities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the needs of transition age youth, neurodevelopmental toxicology, developmental and behavioral screening, and other areas.

The Division provides developmental diagnosis and management for children and youth with a wide array of developmental disorders from the Rochester metropolitan area and much of Western New York State. There are over 8000 visits to the interdisciplinary outpatient clinic annually. Division faculty maintain an active portfolio of funded Developmental and Behavioral sponsored programs with close collaboration across the university. Graduate education is conducted through medical student and resident teaching, an ACGME Fellowship in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program, and postdoctoral students in psychology and other disciplines. In addition, the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, the UCEDD, widens the scope of Divisional activities to include advocacy and community based initiatives. Patient Care

This role requires participation in clinical service, including patient care in an outpatient clinic setting and consultation and care of inpatients on an on-call basis. You will provide patient care in an outpatient setting for at least the equivalent of three half-day clinic sessions every week. You will be the primary attending for our physical disabilities clinic which will meet at least one of your assigned sessions per week. On-call for inpatient care will occur on a rotating basis with other providers in proportion to your full-time employment. Clinical activities include:

  • Applying clinical skills that are clinically sound, effective and achieve exceptional patient outcomes.
  • Making decisions regarding patient care, including initial screening, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, care, reassessment, and discontinuation of care.
  • Monitoring appropriateness of therapeutic management and care.
  • Promoting patient care outcomes on ongoing basis.
  • Developing clinical skills or programs that are locally or regionally distinctive.
  • Providing consultative services to other physicians and clinical providers within the medical center to establish a coordinated care plan for each patient.
  • Integrating innovative approaches to patient care.

Program Development

This position is responsible for the development of interdisciplinary clinical services for children and youth with complex developmental needs including motor problems. You will work with the Departments of Orthopedics, Neurology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as the Neurorestorative Institute to develop regional programs of excellence. In year one, we anticipate that you will begin planning for an interdisciplinary clinical service that will meet the neurodevelopmental and orthopedic needs of children and youth with physical disabilities including cerebral palsy. Year one activities will include:

  • Completion of a regional and institutional needs assessment
  • Review of other services available in the region
  • Analysis of current patient base (diagnoses, ages, locations, services used, reimbursement, )
  • Benchmark with existing comprehensive care models for this population at other medical centers
  • Examine current sustainable models of care coordination in specialty settings
  • Coordinate and lead a work group from the relevant departments
  • Work with departmental leadership regarding insurance reimbursement, space, and staffing
  • planning and needs
  • With the interdisciplinary/interdepartmental work group, begin planning a research agenda
  • Examine potentials for telehealth and other regional support of the PCP to be part of the clinical
  • services of NDBP in general and in the care of children and youth with motor disabilities in specific

The goals of years two and three will be to begin implementation of coordinated clinical care in an iterative fashion building upon experience and to continue coordination and leadership of the interdisciplinary/interdepartmental work group.

Research

Initially, we anticipate you will identify research activities that will be an important part of your career development and will be substituted for other activities as they emerge. You will participate in scholarly activities as evidenced by: publication of clinical investigation, clinical observations, reviews, chapters or books; participation in clinical trials, and clinical investigations; and reviewing manuscripts. You will be encouraged to design and conduct clinical research in an area of clinical specialty. Development and participation in research is encouraged. Mentoring support will be provided.

Training

All faculty are expected to teach. You will be expected to participate in teaching activities consistent with the teaching guidelines of the Department of Pediatrics. The percentage effort for these general teaching activities is included within your clinical time.

An important component of your position will also include the supervision of the NDBP Fellows. Initially, we anticipate you will devote 10% of your time to this responsibility. Additional duties may include:

  • Teach and supervise the patient care of assigned medical students, residents and fellows, monitoring the medical care of patient to assure care provided is safe and effective.
  • Advise LEND trainees in programmatic and project activities.
  • Participate in local and regional educational opportunities
  • Participate in and potentially lead the development or direction of educational programs, curricular offerings and teaching materials.
  • Participate in curriculum committee or other education related committees. Serve as a role model within the department in mentoring students and trainees.

Administrative

Professional development and planning for research and/or program development applications are required in this role. In addition, all faculty are expected to be productive citizens of the University and Medical Center. Therefore you will be expected to participate in various types of committees, consistent with your abilities/interests and at the direction of your Chair. Your administrative responsibilities will include certification of HIPAA training and at least one week of professional development annually. Attendance at divisional and departmental meetings, and meeting UR requirements for mandatory trainings and documentation, are expected.

Many faculty in the Division of Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Pediatrics are involved in community-based activities. These range from research to service to program development. You are encouraged to participate in these types of activities as your time allows.

Qualifications: This position requires a Board Certified in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics . Candidates must have demonstrated skills and experience to participate in the academic programs of the Division, such as fellowship training, clinical research, and community partnerships.

Minimum Education Requirements - list level of education and field(s) acceptable:

MD or DO and current active license issued by the State of New York.
