General Purpose:

To further the Medical Center Compliance Office’s support of compliance and operational policies and procedures, with specific emphasis to assess clinical trial budgets and billing plans of sponsored clinical trials for compliance with applicable laws and policies, and integration of those budgets and plans into the institution’s relevant computer information systems.


Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment:

  • Performs Quality Assurance Reviews on proposed sponsored clinical trials budgets/billing plans to determine compliance with applicable laws and policies, identifies needed corrections, and makes recommendations for corrective action.Holds authority to approve budgets/billing plans upon verifying corrections are made.May prepare and negotiate budgets/billing plans as needed.
  • Initializes approved studies in relevant application systems (i.e., establishes records for each study) and createscustomized study monitoring Post Award Workbooks that are then to be maintained by study team members.Instructs clinical study team members regarding how to maintain the customized tool for adherence to legal responsibilities and to achieve compliance.
  • Acts as Medical Center subject matter expert for clinical trial software application systems/software implementation projects (e.g., patient revenue system, clinical trial management system).Guides clinical study team members regarding proper utilization of software to comply with UR policy and billing requirements.
  • Identifies policies and procedures requiring change.Assists in formulating, reviewing, and updating policies related to clinical research study budgeting and billing, and compiling metrics regarding clinical research studies activity (e.g., study team efficiency, comparison of budgeted amounts to actual amounts).
  • Acts as a resource to Medical Center personnel on a daily basis (i.e., answers questions of study teams and billing offices, and provides direction to those requiring assistance from other departments).
  • Maintains current knowledge of issues in the area of clinical research billing and budgeting compliance through networking, review of literature and participation in seminars and update programs.
  • Other assignments, as requested.


Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or finance and a minimum of 3 – 5 years of relevant experience in the healthcare industry (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). 5 – 7 years of prior experience is preferred, including experience with patient clinical care and/or patient account billing; proficiency with EXCEL; ability to analyze and prepare financial analyses and budgets; knowledge of clinical research billing regulations; detail-oriented thinking with ability to think abstractly; strong verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and ability to simultaneously manage several tasks.
