Under general direction and with considerable latitude for exercise of independent judgment, serves the Department of Imaging Sciences MRI division as assistant supervising MRI Technologist. This individual must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision. Scope includes assisting with daily management of MRI technical staff, coordination of their work and on-call schedules, yearly performance evaluations, timekeeping, HR related activities, protocol development and adherence to Strong Health and Department of Imaging Sciences policies and procedures. This position will work closely with Chief MRI Technologist, SMH Radiologists, SMH Nursing staff, SMH technical and ancillary staff to ensure safe and efficient throughput of patients while maintaining optimal customer, patient/family satisfaction. This role will serve as primary Supervisor in absence of Chief Technologist.
Works closely with SMH Radiologists for MRI protocol development. Keeps abreast of current MRI trends and upgrade paths. Serves as technical preceptor for MRI staff as new protocols, equipment and applications are implemented.
Standardizes and documents protocol changes and educates staff of changes. Assists with development and maintains staff orientation, training manuals, and staff competency documentation. Serves as primary preceptor for newly hired technical staff. Ensures that all staff is adequately trained and adheres to MRI safety guidelines as established by policy and protocol. Works with IS QA coordinator to ensure that all MRI technologists maintain NYS/ARRT certifications and continuing education credits. Assures that all staff complete mandatory hospital inservices, health updates and equipment competencies.
Serves as secondary QA officer by recognizing and reporting image quality and equipment issues. Assist Chief Technologist by interfacing with vendors to ensure all equipment PMs and necessary maintenance is conducted in a timely and efficient manner. Ensures integrity of all patient data for accurate patient identification, data transfer and data storage/PACS.
Assists Chief Technologist in completing daily and on-call staffing schedule and assures that MRI staff plan is kept current to meet the needs of patient volumes.
Assists Chief Technologist with completion of MRI payroll in accordance with URMC policies/procedures. Assists with annual performance evaluations in accordance with URMC policy for those staff in his/her report. Assists with recruiting, interviews and makes hiring/firing disciplinary recommendations to Chief Technologist, IS Operation Director and UISMH Radiologist in charge. Works closely with SMH HR department in order to handle disciplinary issues in compliance with URMC guidelines. Assures proper inventory is maintained and appropriate par levels are established. Ensures staff adheres to established protocols for appropriate inventory usage and waste minimization.
Serves as an ambassador for Strong Health, Department of Imaging Sciences by creating a positive interface with all customers, patients, vendors and referring agencies. Leads staff by positive example with clear and concise communications. Leads staff with Power of One and like institutional initiatives.
Acts as back up to MRI techs by covering sick calls, vacations and staffing issues. May be required to serve as representative on various committees and groups. May be required to serve as research coordinator for Clinical trials and similar research activities. Serves as primary educational coordinator for RAD TECH/MRI student rotations.

Master's degree in Medical Terminology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Serology, or equivalent sub-specialty certification and 3 years of clinical laboratory experience. Bachelor's degree in any of the above disciplines with 5 years’ experience in clinical laboratory science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Satisfactory completion of an approved School of Radiologic Technology Program.
