University of Rochester Assistant Director for Residential Life in Rochester, New York

General Purpose:

The Assistant Director for Residential Life works closely with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs to advise and serve as a resource for Residential Life student staff and residents of the Student Living Center. This position assists in managing the staff supervision, student support, and student conduct functions of the Office of Residential Life.

Resident Advisor Supervision Responsibilities

  • Performs the Resident Advisor Selection process in spring semester
  • Organizes fall and spring training for the Resident Advisor staff
  • Plans and leads the weekly Resident Advisor meeting, and follows up with concerns raised at this time
  • Manages the Resident Advisor time-off requests, and the Resident Advisor Resource Binder
  • Supports Resident Advisors by addressing on-call questions and concerns
  • Coordinates Resident Advisor responsibilities during Student Living Center openings, closing, and breaks
  • Advises Resident Advisors in planning, managing, and assessing community building events
  • Assists the Resident Advisors with ordering, procuring, accessing, and storing supplies for community building programs and activities
  • Meets with the Resident Advisors on a monthly basis for one-on-one meetings
  • Coordinates staff development activities and outings

Student Support Responsibilities

  • Actively pursues the development, implementation, and promotion of educational community building to enhance the quality of residential life at Eastman
  • Lives on-campus to provide support to students during and after office hours, and assists in handling student crises and emergencies
  • Provides personal counseling and advisement to individual students, special interest committees, and the Resident Advisor staff on matters regarding living accommodations, roommate concerns, and related student issues. When necessary, makes referrals to the appropriate University agencies
  • Participates in the on-call rotation with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Assistant Director for Student Activities and Engagement

Student Conduct Responsibilities

  • Serves as Eastman conduct officer by understanding and interpreting the Standards of Student Conduct, as well as University policies and procedures
  • Ensures that students are notified annually of the Standards of Student Conduct
  • Assures that student conduct is administered in a fair, impartial, restorative, and educational manner
  • Maintains online case records in Advocate
  • Meets with students accused of violations, adjudicates cases, and implements sanctions if appropriate
  • Conducts preliminary investigations, as appropriate, by interviewing students and witnesses
  • Partners with the Department of Public Safety, Center for Student Conflict Management, and at times, the Rochester Police Department investigating high level violations
  • Works closely and collaboratively with the Center for Student Conflict Management in processing complex conduct cases, conducting student conduct hearings, and offering alternative conflict resolution options
  • Provides certification for agencies requesting student conduct information in accordance with FERPA

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assists with process and paperwork associated with Housing Lottery process
  • Participates in the management of community building finances and the annual budgeting process
  • Conducts inspections of the Student Living Center
  • Manages the Student Living Center Storage program to ensure the organized and safe storage of residents’ items, and collaborates with the Administrative Assistant for Student Affairs to post storage fees
  • Manages the retrieval, cataloging, and return of illegal items confiscated from residents
  • Assists in updating and maintaining departmental online presence and print materials, including but not limited to website content, social media outlets, and newsletters
  • Designs and updates Residential Life bulletin boards in the Student Living Center

Summer Session Responsibilities

  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates Summer Session Assistants to support summer residents
  • Collaborates with the Director of Summer @ Eastman and Eastman Community Music School staff to plan for summer programs
  • Works directly with the student staff by holding weekly staff meetings, creating an on-call schedule, assisting with conduct concerns, and hosting programs
  • Collaborates with Eastman administration on planning for conference-related housing

Other Responsibilities

  • Develops relationships with, and serves as a liaison to, other University colleagues and departments
  • Coordinates with staff members in the implementation of the CARE Network at Eastman
  • Represents the Office of Residential Life in various meeting groups, including but not limited to:
  • Eastman Student Support Team (SST)
  • Eastman Safety and Security Committee
  • Eastman Dining Committee
  • Standing Committee on Alcohol Policy and Education (SCAPE)
  • Summer @ Eastman Committee
  • Actively seeks out and participates in webinars, conferences, and other opportunities for professional development
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs


Masters' degree and some experience in college student personnel work, preferably in residence halls; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
