Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Performs complex cardiac diagnostic testing, clinical tasks, and some clerical functions in support of patients and care providers in the Children’s Heart Center. Exercises complex skill and judgment.

Responsibilities:

Holter / Event Monitor /ABPM Service

Instruct both in-patient and out-patient as to the use of the Holter monitor, event monitor or Automatic blood pressure monitor. Upload and place Holter monitors and ABPMs. Provide procedure instructions and return instructions, complete and submit necessary paperwork including log-out, patient diary, baseline transmission, Philips registration, and billing documentation. Track the Holter, event monitor and ABPM inventory. Ship monitors to patient/families. Log–in completed holters and ABPMs, prepare holter for next patient, washing all components between patients using proper Infection Control guidelines. Download ABPM . Track diagnostic reports. Access on-line Philips reporting system as needed. Ensure all documentation has been reviewed and filed timely and appropriately. Communicate with supervisor and Philip rep. for problem solving. Inventory and maintain all equipment and supplies. Fax completed Holter reports to pediatricians.

Daily clinic flow and cross-coverage

Clinic room utilization, patient intake, obtaining patient vital signs, performing electrocardiograms, Orthostatic BPs, urine dips, assisting with the Hoyer lift. Uses the e-record system to input patient data, release and input orders and communicate with physicians and other health care team members. Maintains linen and all items necessary for clinic, ensures all areas are stocked on a daily basis. Provides cross-coverage during scheduled and unscheduled staff absences. Opens and prepares clinic for daily operations. Prints daily schedules and prepares clinic for next day. Assist with exercise testing on patients under the supervision of a registered nurse using a computerized stress testing system. Perform high level disinfection of exercise equipment, following hospital disinfection policy.

Daily rounding and Muse checks

Round on the in-patient units and Emergency department daily downloading all the electrocardiograms. Check the Muse system daily for electrocardiograms accuracy, patient identifiers. Communicate with supervisor, IT and Philips rep for problem solving.

Clerical

Call INR and transplant patients / family with reminders regarding testing. Send/fax/mail test requisitions. Call Labs for testing results. Check fax machine for results and route appropriately. Cross coverage of clerical staff as needed.

Supply Inventory and ordering

Assist Nursing and Echo Lab Supervisor to ensure required patient care supplies are stocked, expired items are discarded and replaced. Follows JCAHO guidelines in the storage and disposal of clinic supplies. Communicate with staff about supply needs. Order approved supply requests online. Provide ordering documentation to Division Administrator. Maintain common item number catalog list for routine supplies. Communicate with vendor about new/returned/backorder supplies.

Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent plus three years of experience in a patient care setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates degree preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures and computer experience is preferred.

Prefer a 4 year college education which included laboratory sciences and technical training closely related to this position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required; or a 2 year college education leading to an Associate degree in Laboratory Sciences and/or related technical subjects and and two to three years of experience in a patient care setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures. Experience with pediatric patients preferred. Experience with computers preferred.

Must have well-developed verbal and written communication skills. Must demonstrate exceptional caring and concern for the patients, and have exceptional customer relations skills with providers and other staff. Ability to work as an integral member of a team, have experience with pediatric patients or exhibit an interest in the pediatric patient population. Must be familiar with computers.
